When Freyberg Community School in Te Atatu approached us about wanting to upgrade their old middle school playground, which was located in a relatively confined area. We put our thinking caps on to create a playground that was jam packed with play value and that would provide plenty of fun and challenge for the different levels of ability in this age group.
Our solution was an epic play structure, custom designed especially for this space - which we have since dubbed the Freyberg Epic - and the school was thrilled with it! At either end of the structure are our spacious octagonal deck towers for socialising, each fitted with age appropriate climbing and sliding experiences, and in between is a double play circuit with a range of climbing, upper body and balance challenges. These have all been designed in such a way that there is always plenty of challenge for the older kids but allowing for the younger users to gradually progress as their strength and confidence grows. This design is built to withstand heavy use from the large numbers of kids that all want to play at the same time during their breaks. With sliding, climbing, balance, upper-body, spinning, crawl and imagination play all covered - this epic playground really has it all!
Deputy Principal Emma-lea Graaf says: "Our tamariki love their new playground with it providing plenty of opportunities for creative play, cooperation, strength, challenge and coordination for all abilities and ages. Playground People have a genuine passion for creating amazing play spaces for all tamariki to enjoy. We can't wait to carry out further play space projects with the team in the future."
