In 2021 we were engaged by Mitre10 to work with them and their Helping Hands team to build fantastic new playgrounds for six lucky schools. This incredibly generous gift has enabled these schools to give their current and future students amazing play spaces that they will use for many years to come.
At Playground People we are super passionate about providing great quality playgrounds for our New Zealand schools. In working with Mitre10, we have found a partner who is equally as passionate about giving back to their local communities.
Glenview Primary School in Porirua hadn’t had a new playground in over 20 years. The existing playground was a dated, ageing structure requiring a lot of maintenance to keep safe, and it lacked challenges for senior students. So the school was over the moon to be selected as as the sixth recipient of the Mitre 10’s Helping Hands Project Playground initiative! The playground design was student-led and incorporates student’ drawings into the structure to reflect their diverse cultural backgrounds, which includes many Pacific Island cultures, Māori, and refugees from Syria and Myanmar. Students were asked to draw what play means to them, and representations of those cultures came through strongly. The playground features a Kompan Spica carousel as well as the "Glenview" JT768 V5 modular playground structure, designed to suit kids across the primary school age group.
Principal Lynda Knight-de Blois says "...this new playground will help our children improve their ability, agility and wellbeing too, boosting their core and upper-body strength which is crucial to improving fine motor skills. It’s created a lot of excitement, and we encourage the wider community to come and enjoy it too". Lynda says “We wanted somewhere that sparks joy, and this definitely does that. We’re so grateful to Mitre 10 for choosing us."
