Installed in 2021 and opened in 2022, the Island View Reserve playground at Waihi Beach has been honoured as Recreation Aotearoa’s 2024 Play Space of the Year for projects under $500k. This award recognises the thoughtful design and level of community engagement appeal that resulted in a play space that has become a firm favourite.
Designed by Vanessa Davis, the playground seamlessly integrates with its seaside setting. Inspired by the nearby sand dunes, it features a blend of durable, high-play-value equipment and natural landscaping. Recycled timber from the Mount Maunganui boardwalk and a large driftwood log that washed up on Waihi Beach add unique character, making the play space both functional and playful. Notable play elements include the Kompan Six-Sided Climbing Structure, the Supernova, and the Sand Play Mini for collaborative, imaginative fun. The Eagle Claw Swing offers dynamic or gentle swinging options, while the surrounding pump track provides an area for biking, scooting, and skating. With play thoughtfully built into every corner, it’s easy to see why this space is so popular with both locals and visitors.
