Last year we worked with Jennice Stringer from Auckland Council to design the centrepiece - customised tower for Keith Park Playground in the Auckland suburb of Manurewa. This was to be no ordinary tower though, the Manurewa local board sought input from a wide range of organisations including CCS Disability, Acorn Autism, Cerebral Palsy Society of New Zealand, Blind Low Vision NZ and Deaf Aotearoa, with the aim of creating an inclusive playground for people of all ages and abilities. Our tower needed to be wheelchair accessible, which included constructing a purpose-built ramp from the surrounding mound to allow this. The tower features climbing and balance challenge as well as ground level interactive panels and a tube slide with our transparent panels. The playground also includes a basket swing, Percussion Play music equipment and an accessible trampoline and carousel.
We were very proud when Recreation Aotearoa named Keith Park the 2020 playground of the year, but more importantly we are wrapped to see a playground that has been designed with so much input from the disabled community being so popular with its intended users – everyone!
