With the help of South Sci - an organisation dedicated to creating career paths into the STEM fields for South Auckland Kids - earlier this year the students set about creating a new play space that incorporated Tikanga Maori, astronomy and fitness into one big package.
Playground People were delighted to help and with the assistance of our Play Consultant Blair Sneddon (formerly a navigator with the Royal New Zealand Navy) we were able to reconfigure our InterChallenge Confidence Course to encapsulate these features.
Installed at over 40 Intermediates, Colleges and Full Primary Schools around New Zealand, our InterChallenge system is a big step up from playground equipment, offering more age appropriate challenge for an older age group.
Laying on along a north/south line the structure of the InterChallenge – or Te Papa Takaro o te Tātai Arorangi as Papakura Intermediate have dubbed theirs – not only represents the sun and planets found within our solar system, but also allows the students to easily monitor the rising sun as it moves back and forth between the summer/winter solstice.
This collaboration resulted in a great space that allows the kids to explore maths, engineering physical fitness, Maori themes and of course fun.
Well done students of Papakura Intermediate, you have created a wonderful legacy for your school.
