Nestled in the heart of Waikato, Pirongia Schools is a focal point for a strong and close knit community. Last year the school needed new classrooms which resulted in their old playground having to be removed. The good news was the school was able set aside a nice, big area complete with new timber surrounds ready for a new playground. This is where Playground People came in.
The school had consulted with the pupils to see what play experiences they most desired, this gave us a great starting point for the new design. The school was after a playground where all the children could play together, this is not always easy when there is a wide range of ages and capabilities. We were able to modify one of our more popular combination playground designs to perfectly fit the available area, creating a series of fun circuits that provide progressive challenge and socialising opportunities for the whole school. We were also able to incorporate a slide from the old playground into the new design.
The playground is topped off with one of our very popular Ace Basket Swings – a particular favourite with the local community who freely use the playground in the weekends.
Principal Jan Cullen says:
The playground was designed for Y0-8 students so that can play and socialise together. This works brilliantly with challenges and spaces for all.
The circuits work very well, catering for all ages, fitness and ability levels.
Our students continually create ways to use the same equipment in different ways. We foster that.
We love how students just hang out in varying places in the playground.
The children are crazy about the basket swing.
The playground is used by our community after school and on weekends and we have had very positive feedback from them regarding the functionality of the design.
