Royal Road School were one of the eight New Zealand Schools that took part on the ground breaking 2012 study on play in schools, Principal Wayne Leighton is a strong advocate of play within schools to enhance learning and famously reintroduced the classic kiwi game of bullrush back in the school’s play times.
We have worked with Royal Road School a number of times in the past so when Wayne told us about his vision to create a new imagination play area ins a narrow, tree-filled area on the side of the play field we were right on board. Working with the school we have created a series of simple but varied balance challenges strung through the trees which form multiple pathways for the children to explore and chase each other around. Interspersed through the trees are three Percussion Play Music Instruments which add a sense of wonder and a beautiful melodic soundtrack to the play area. The addition of these imagination play features to the site have truly brought it to life and it is filled with children each playtime.
