Opened in 2022, Te Wao Nui Wellington Children’s Hospital features a unique rooftop playscape designed by Local Landscape Architecture Collective, emphasising lush greenery and natural elements to contrast typical medical facility perceptions. The landscape includes dense planting and integrated lighting that complement the building's colourful façade as well as a selection of our playground equipment.
The rooftop playscape, developed through workshops with hospital staff, aims to provide a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for patients, staff, and families, blending play and rehabilitation with nature. Inspired by the muehlenbeckia plant, the playscape features three distinct sections: garden, play, and rehabilitation.
The playscape's overall design supports the hospital's rehabilitation goals while creating a vibrant, engaging outdoor space for all users. We were delighted to be involved with this very special play space.
A special thanks to photographer Andy Spain for the use of his wonderful images.
We are thrilled for all involved that this project received the Award of Excellence in the Landscapes of Care catagory at the 2024 NZILA awards!
